About the Artist

Michael Williams was born in 1978 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. He received his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He has had solo exhibitions at Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montreal and Gallery Met in New York as well as gallery exhibitions at CANADA, New York, Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zurich, Karma, Amagansett and Michael Werner, London. He was included in “The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World” at the Museum of Modern Art.

Williams paintings have evolved over the last few years from large gestural oil paintings to similarly-sized paintings printed from digital files onto canvases and then sometimes painted over or airbrushed.  They blur the lines between traditional painterly techniques and digital imagery and hide the struggle behind the making of the image—a fact that Williams likes when working with the computer.  Despite the shift away from gestural mark making on the actual canvas, there remains a warmth and personal quality to the printed paintings.  His lexicon of images, often comical, are culled from his inner psyche and they serve to create paintings that are both abstract and figurative.
