About the Artist

Born in Providence Rhode Island, Ellen Gallagher (b. 1965) received her BA at Oberlin College, and studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Skowhegan School of Arts in Maine, graduating in 1993. Introduced to the art world at the 1995 Whitney Biennial, Gallagher has since exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Des Moines Art Center, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and the ICA Boston. Gallagher describes her work as evidence of language in motion, and the processes that create stereotypes. Bill Goldston invited Gallagher out to ULAE in 1997. In her Untitled print Gallagher uses one of her characteristic motifs, lips, using the framed and consistent repetition familiar to her work.
